Impegnativo, profondo, letteralmente mostruoso sotto ogni punto di vista: Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate apre una nuova stagione di caccia su Nintendo Switch. L'edizione definitiva dell'ultimo capitolo “classico” della serie è una voluminosa enciclopedia dei mostri che rende tributo agli oltre dieci anni di vita della caccia Capcom, grazie a una miriade di contenuti nuovi di zecca. Forgiato ben prima del terremoto Monster Hunter World, i giocatori occidentali potrebbero vivere Generations Ultimate come una sorta di paradosso. Se è vero che gli appassionati dell'arte venatoria virtuale si sentiranno subito a casa, i neofiti della serie dovranno scendere a molti compromessi per godersi una caccia dal gusto più antico, specialmente se hanno già calcato le lande del Nuovo Mondo.

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate è semplicemente il Monster Hunter più bello, completo, ricco e longevo del vecchio corso, ma questo significa tuffarsi in un passato che l'uscita di Monster Hunter World ha reso più obsoleto di quanto non volessimo credere. È stata dura tornare sui nostri passi e rinunciare a tante piccole comodità, ma una volta rientrati nel circolo vizioso della caccia, è stato altrettanto difficile rinunciare a quell'ultima missione con cui chiudere una serata all'insegna di un attesissimo e soddisfacente grado G. La conversione per Switch è di buona qualità, ma tradisce le origini su Nintendo 3DS del codice: la nostra speranza è che Capcom trovi un compromesso tra le capacità dell'hardware di Switch e le meccaniche aggiornate di Monster Hunter World così da poter offrire ai possessori della console ibrida un corso nuovo e parallelo che, grazie alla portabilità, potrebbe rappresentare l'incarnazione definitiva del franchise.

Un episodio nuovo, il primo su Switch, ma vecchio, che arriva sul mercato dopo il clamore generato da Monster Hunter World e che difficilmente troverà un riscontro altrettanto ampio. Tecnicamente la console può offrire di più ma evidentemente non è ancora giunto il momento per un capitolo originale sviluppato appositamente per la nuova macchina di Nintendo. E allora godiamoci dunque questa versione definitiva dell'episodio creato per 3DS, con un colpo d'occhio decisamente più intrigante e qualche piccola novità in esclusiva.

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate per Nintendo Switch è il miglior Monster Hunter portatile di sempre, probabilmente il titolo più longevo (al lancio) della saga. Il porting, se pur lusinghiero, non riesce a non tradire le radici su 3DS e il salto generazionale che sarebbe potuto avvenire in “ambito portable” non è ancora realtà. Al netto di un’obsolescenza rimarcata in maniera impietosa dall’arrivo di Monster Hunter: World, questo capitolo è un’occasione imperdibile per i puristi che amano la difficoltà e la macchinosità della serie originari e che non vogliono dire addio al vecchio ciclo prima di avervi fatto un’ultima, prolungata e temeraria visita. Per i nuovi utenti è caldamente consigliato di prendere il titolo con le pinze e di cimentarvici solamente se alla ricerca dell’essenza più ostica della saga, o per continuare un viaggio che potrebbe essersi quasi esaurito, dopo aver apprezzato ogni venatura del magnifico nuovo mondo.

Se nourrissant de la fibre des Monster Hunter, Generations Ultimate est un « best of » qui mise sur sa générosité et son exigence. Bien loin des standards visuels du moment, le titre de Capcom souffre de lacunes techniques évidentes et aurait mérité un meilleur traitement. Bien que long à maîtriser et d’une rigidité d’un autre temps, il offre un challenge passionnant pour quiconque parvient à dompter son gameplay et ses à-côtés. Archaïque mais tellement délicieux, que ce soit en solo ou en multijoueur.
