Scars Above offers a great shooter experience that's a bit rough around the edges in some areas when it comes to realizing its vision and potential. While these problems are noticeable, I don't feel like it takes too much from the full product while offering a haunting survival horror experience with a unique gimmick that makes players think about the best approach to the way they face the environment around the enemies.

Despite the simplicity and a few missteps, I actually quite liked the roughly seven hours I spent playing through Scars Above. The story was interesting, the environments were diverse and lovely to look at and the sound design and music were sensational. I’d describe this as something akin to a refreshed PlayStation 2-era sci-fi shooter rather than a contemporary title, but I say that with a fondness for it, rather than disdain. I think that Mad Head Games should be proud of what it’s achieved, and if third-person shooters are your thing, I’d encourage you to check it out.

Scars Above Scars Above di Mad Head Games è un titolo che vuole impersonare tutte le capacità, i desideri, e le speranze di un team che ha voglia di cambiare. Il paradosso che scaturisce da questa produzione risiede nell’intelligenza del team serbo di non rischiare nulla, e usare le disavventure della squadra Scars per creare un titolo difficile da odiare, ma anche difficile da non ritenere superfluo. Il lavoro svolto non appare infimo come in altre produzioni, e quel poco che manca di polishing pad viene compensato da una discreta direzione artistica e un sistema di gameplay funzionale, e a più battute divertente. I problemi non sono certo di poco conto, e finiscono per minare la breve esperienza complessiva, di cui la rigiocabilità è un altro fattore non pervenuto. Scars Above per i giocatori può essere visto con un discreto esponente del genere TPS con deriva rougelite, forse primo capitolo acerbo di una nuova IP, o forse semplice esperimento di una Software House nella marea di titoli che, come altri, faticano a ritagliarsi una reale identità nel mercato videoludico odierno. Lamentarsi per ciò che non è come si vorrebbe e non apprezzare ciò che ci si trova dinanzi, è solo il primo passo verso un futuro dove la creatività e il coraggio saranno sempre più rare. Scars Above è un progetto AA (non AAA) che merita indubbiamente una possibilità. Quello di Mad Head Games costituisce infatti un “esperimento” dall’esito complessivamente positivo, nato dall’ibridazione tra passioni, idee, elementi e meccaniche di varia provenienza. Il risultato è una sequela di aspetti ben riusciti che però vengono penalizzati da una realizzazione forse troppo sbrigativa. L’aggiunta del new game+ e una boss fight maggiormente all’altezza di quelle precedenti avrebbero giovato non poco a una produzione che, sia pure oscillando tra alti e bassi (specie dal lato tecnico), può essere considerata molto più che dignitosa.

Le ambientazioni ispirate e l’elemento tattico alla base del gunplay sono certamente apprezzabili ma non riescono a far superare i confini della sufficienza a Scars Above. Molti degli errori e delle leggerezze si devono alla gioventù dello studio di sviluppo, che è stato comunque in grado di definire una lore credibile e approfondita e un intreccio completo ma non pienamente soddisfacente. Se avete una passione smodata per lo spazio e il cinema di fantascienza, potreste prendere in considerazione l’idea di accompagnare Kate nel suo viaggio ma, in caso contrario, i motivi che dovrebbero spingervi a provarlo si riducono notevolmente.

El resultado final es un juego que se deja jugar y anima a completar las 10 horas que nos ha llevado terminarlo, pero que dista mucho de alcanzar la maestría en su propuesta. Localizadores que marean y pierden más que ayudar, objetos perdidos por el mapeado de forma que parece aleatoria y unos puzzles basados casi tan solo en la exploración completan una fórmula que no pasa de resultona y que aunque he llegado a disfrutar en algunos momentos, me ha dejado con ganas de terminar la aventura y pasar a jugar a otra cosa. Ojo, no digo que sea una mala propuesta pero en un momento como éste en el que tenemos el calendario lleno de grandes lanzamientos, Scars Above no deja de ser un juego entretenido que tira de elementos conocidos para formular su oferta de juego.

Scars Above è un titolo che ha tanti difetti e pochi pregi. Sicuramente le meccaniche da third-person-shooter sono azzeccate ma, ad esempio, i combattimenti all’arma bianca sono letteralmente inguardabili. La storia che gira intorno al titolo non colpisce particolarmente e presenta qualche problematica, con il villain principale scritto in maniera non ottimale. Per non parlare dell’Art Direction che, nonostante sia gradevole da vedere, risulta poco ispirata e non dà la percezione di esplorare un pianeta sconosciuto. Insomma, Scars Above è un progetto che avrebbe potuto dare molto, ma molto di più, ma purtroppo le scelte apportate al gioco sono risultate veramente poco azzeccate ed entusiasmanti, almeno la maggior parte.

Scars Above no me ha entrado bien por sus sistemas de progresión y por una jugabilidad desequilibrada, pero sí que me ha gustado su historia, ambientación y protagonista. Creo que si te gusta la ciencia ficción, el juego te va a entretener, pero tiene demasiados fallos para poder recomendarlo. Por fortuna, su estructura de juego de aventura lineal con algo de backtracking y exploración te empujan a jugarlo hasta el final.

Scars Above shows a lot of potential in its third-person shooting, fun elemental reactions, and a good number of creatures to experiment with. The thrill of setting out to discover a new alien world is short-lived, however, due to the weapons and gadgets in your arsenal quickly growing so powerful that nothing poses a threat. And while there are a few excellent environments to explore, everything within them – the characters, story, and universe – feel weak and underdeveloped, giving you few reasons to stop and smell the alien roses once you’ve blasted your way through.
