n conclusione dunque Sea of Thieves: Anniversary Update è il degno successore di quanto fatto vedere nell’arco del primo anno del titolo piratesco di Microsoft. Le aggiunte sono tutte azzeccate, con una componente "single-player" costituita dalle Storie Assurde, davvero ben realizzate, meccaniche sandbox piacevoli e un consistente e ben strutturato comparto multiplayer, ideale per chi ama l’ebrezza degli scontri navali. Nulla di più ci saremmo aspettati da questo titolo che ancora una volta conferma le enormi potenzialità che il guscio mostrato durante i primi mesi dall’uscita celava in maniera tanto gelosa, e che ora, passo dopo passo, stanno finalmente emergendo.

Sea of Thieves is a disgustingly enjoyable game that is endlessly entertaining among friends. That said, it has an incredible deficit of organized content, too few customization options, and needs a bigger, more varied world map. I have no doubt that as the game grows and evolves, it will become an iconic, phenomenal title, but for now it remains deeply flawed even while being relentlessly fun.

Il nuovo gioco di Rare è contraddistinto da uno stile e un carattere unico. Un sandbox ampio e ambizioso che trova tuttavia in quest'ultimo aspetto il suo più grande ostacolo che ne ha infine limitato i contenuti. Non è un titolo adatto a tutti, ed è ben chiaro, ma la sua capacità di regalare un divertimento genuino è qualcosa di assolutamente raro da trovare oggigiorno. Nel caso siate quel tipo di giocatore a cui basta un'ottima base per passare allegre serate in compagnia dei propri amici, difficilmente rimarrete delusi. Se invece si sta cercando un'avventura piratesca con una narrazione ricca di colpi di scena, si è completamente fuori strada, dato che in Sea of Thieves i giocatori raccontano le proprie storie. Con la consapevolezza che l'elevato grinding finirà per stancarci presto, non ci resta allora che scoprire quali sono i piani del team di sviluppo e come lo evolveranno nel corso dei prossimi mesi.

Sea of Thieves donne de multiples outils aux joueurs pour qu’ils plongent, ensemble, dans de grandes aventures maritimes à base de petites quêtes et d’éminents affrontements. Avec un système d’XP faisant la part belle aux améliorations strictement cosmétiques, le titre de Rare mise sur les voyages parcourus plutôt que sur la destination. L’intérêt ne réside en fait pas dans les quêtes en elles-mêmes, mais dans tout ce qui gravite autour. Chaque excursion peut potentiellement réserver des moments mémorables, pour peu que l’on trouve les bonnes personnes avec qui partir en mer. Derrière l’aspect cartoon de sa direction artistique et ses jolis graphismes, Sea of Thieves est en fait impitoyable envers les joueurs désorganisés et solitaires. Ses missions peu variées et ses îles trop semblables l’empêchent cependant d’accéder à la fontaine de jouvence. Annoncé comme un jeu service au contenu régulièrement mis à jour, l’abonnement via Game Pass est surement le meilleur moyen de goûter au grog concocté par Rare sans risquer de hoqueter sur son prix fort.

Cette note, plutôt surévaluée par rapport à l’état actuel du jeu, a valeur de note d’espoir. Dans l’absolu, Sea of Thieves a tout du jeu de pirate ultime, tant il donne à sa philosophie une forme et un sens, à base de sensations exceptionnelles et de mécaniques coop originales et ingénieuses. Mais son contenu de lancement est si rachitique qu’il peut vite s’avérer vain à force de passer beaucoup d’heures dessus. Rare a donc du pain sur la planche pour donner à ce potentiel inouï la plénitude qu’il mérite. Prenons donc notre mal en patience, et attendons de voir si ces eaux valent la peine d’être sondées sur le long terme.

Los chicos de Rare han creado una base excelente con Sea of Thieves, pero el problema es ese, que solo es una base. Falta «chicha» casi por todos lados, ya que hay muy pocos tipos de misiones, y en general, de contenido. Por tanto, lo que tenemos es un sandbox (o un seabox en este caso) en el sentido más literal, ya que estamos ante un campo de arena perfecto en el que poder divertirnos con los amigos. Esta es la división que hará que disfrutemos de Sea of Thieves o no. Si no os importa realizar las mismas misiones todo el tiempo siempre que tengamos a nuestra disposición la posibilidad de hacer casi lo que queramos junto a nuestros amigos, Sea of Thieves es para vosotros. Si buscáis una experiencia algo más guiada o con algún tipo de historia que podáis disfrutar tanto en solitario como en compañía, entonces será mejor que busquéis otras opciones. Será interesante ver cómo evolucionará el juego, ya que es algo que debe hacer para que la comunidad continúe jugando, y estemos ante el juego de piratas definitivo, ya que las bases las han colocado, y les queda pulir el diamante en bruto que han creado.

Sea of Thieves è un gioco che non si dimentica. Meraviglioso da vedere, strepitoso da ascoltare, unico in gruppo e decisamente particolare da soli, l'avventura piratesca di Rare è un fragoroso esperimento costruito unendo tutti i difetti tipici del genere per trasformarli in un'unica straordinaria virtù. Non è gioco per tutti, sicuramente non per chi vuole sentirsi invincibile e unico vanitoso protagonista, ma è un'opera che ha tutte le carte in regola per divenire qualcosa di prezioso. I dubbi però permangono: Rare non è una saetta, non c'è traccia, attualmente di una lista di elementi che verranno aggiunti nel breve e nel lungo periodo. A causa di questa incertezza, Sea of Thieves paga lo scotto di aver debuttato fuori tempo massimo, dopo la cocente delusione di tanti, troppi giochi che hanno esordito nelle stesse condizioni.

Sea of Thieves è un gioco che affascina sin dalle prime battute e può donare alla ciurma di pirati momenti indimenticabili se giocato in coop, ma allo stesso tempo manifesta tutti i limiti di un sandbox in cui è palese una certa mancanza di varietà nei contenuti disponibili al lancio, troppo risicati per sperare in una longevità eccezionale. In single-player, poi, un titolo come Sea of Thieves rischia di perdere tutte le sfumature che solo una squadra di quattro amici è in grado di offrire: salpare verso l'ignoto in compagnia degli amici, andando alla ricerca di un fortino da assaltare o cercando di sopravvivere all'attacco di un Kraken sono emozioni forti che difficilmente possono essere vissute in altre produzioni, ma che col tempo finiscono inevitabilmente per assomigliarsi e perdere un po' del valore iniziale. Siamo curiosi di scoprire come Rare supporterà il gioco nei mesi a venire, e se sarà in grado di ascoltare il feedback degli utenti per creare un'esperienza ancora più coinvolgente e ricca di un semplice sandbox in cui l'eccessiva libertà potrebbe risultare non adatta ai più.

When Sea of Thieves clicks, most likely because you have a full galleon of fellow pirates to work with, it can create a rousing, fun experience whether completing a long voyage for the Gold Hoarders or even just sailing around, looking for any hidden secrets or loot. But remove that and becomes clear that you have a game with little in the way or content or variety. It’s still decent, of course, but it’s nothing to write home about without a group. There are probably several more depth-related puns to be made, but let’s just say that to get the most out of things, you had best work out something with some friends or fellow players to create a devoted crew, lest things get shallow quickly.

Sea of Thieves is a daring attempt by Rare but also a lacking one on so many fronts. While the graphics are fantastic and the game has a unique charm, ultimately the world feels empty, devoid of content and features. Sailing with friends can be an exhilarating experience at first, but when there's not much to do the fun dies down pretty quickly.

Sea of Thieves is one of the most frustrating games in absolutely ages. When it’s good, it’s uproariously fun. When it’s tedious, it can suck all of the joy out of a room. Usually your playtime falls somewhere in between those two extremes. Still, if you told me tomorrow that it had been updated with new quest types, enemies and my mates were all down to don our upgraded eye patches again, I’d be back in a heartbeat. ‘Cos there’s nothing else like Sea of Thieves right now. And if pirate lore has taught us anything, it’s that it’s better to be infamous than forgotten about.

Rare's piratical playground looks lovely, but you have to make a bit too much of your own fun. The sound and the fury of the waves is lovely, but for Sea of Thieves to be properly good it needs to give the players more to work with.
