As an engrossing 15 to 20-hour adventure game, a chronicle of a small town and its people in turbulent times, a reverent celebration of the finer details of Late Medieval history, and a clever detective story in which straight answers are hard to come by – Pentiment is a clear champion. My gripes about it are all relatively minor, and I look forward to playing it at least once or twice more to explore roads not taken. It never suffers for its simplicity, lacking in combat or traditional puzzles, because of how effectively it tangled me up in the complexities of its gorgeously-realized world and made me want to learn all I could about its people and its past. There isn't much more to say about Pentiment, other than I can hardly recommend it highly enough.

Pentiment is a true achievement of marrying story, style, and theme into a magical and cohesive whole. In lieu of 3D graphics that try too hard and still fail to represent an authentic-feeling world, Obsidian’s artists opted for a more illustrative aesthetic to tell their gripping story of a murder in an abbey, a choice that resonates throughout the entire game. While it might not satisfy every player, especially those expecting a more traditional RPG or adventure experience, those who can immerse themselves in Pentiment’s vision of 16th century Bavaria will find one of the best games of the year.

Pentiment es un cuadro en movimiento donde los personajes evolucionan y se transforman mientras somos una hoja al viento del destino. Todos, por simples que parezcan, poseen profundidad. El escenario es gigantesco y está conectado de forma sencilla, pero efectiva. No necesita grandes complejidades, es un videojuego fácil de jugar, fácil de entender y ridículamente fácil de disfrutar.

Pentiment does what it does with a magnificent blend of dialogue, characters, and narrative. The winding path you’ll take has plenty of off ramps, and while all roads lead to Rome, the journey there feels unique to you. It’s so fascinating getting to your specific ending, you’ll probably even play it again to see what other decisions look like. Pentiment might not be for everyone, but for the genre, it’s a magnificent and compelling work of art.

Pentiment fera clairement partie de ces titres que nous referons à l'avenir. Avec sa finesse d'écriture, sa rejouabilité immense, son atmosphère génialissime, sa galerie de personnages réussie et son côté « drogue douce », le titre nous donne envie de tout savoir, tout comprendre sur les agissements des habitants de Tassing et les mystères de l'Abbaye de Kiersau. Obsidian réussit un tour de magie en insufflant une telle énergie dans son oeuvre que l'on ne sait pas si nous sommes face à un polar, une fresque historique ou une histoire fantastique et lugubre. En fait, c'est un peu tout à la fois... Si vous êtes passionné de Point and Click, bloquez votre journée de demain ! Si vous êtes novice...bloquez votre journée de demain ! Il vous faut essayer ce titre qui, malgré quelques défauts techniques, une absence parfois frustrante d'ambiance musicale, et quelques ralentissements dans l'histoire, risque fort de vous hypnotiser pendant de vos longues soirées d’hiver.

Pentiment è la versione Obisdian di un’avventura narrativa moderna, che recupera elementi leggerissimi di gioco di ruolo e alcune meccaniche da avventura grafica per mettere in scena la storia di Andreas Maler, miniatore itinerante di Norimberga, e del presente, passato e futuro della comunità di Tassing, borgo fittizio della Baviera del XVI secolo. Il risultato è un gioco lineare nelle sue meccaniche, ma estremamente curato nei dettagli e nello stile, capace di muoversi con grandissima consapevolezza tra I pilastri della terra di Ken Follet e Il nome della rosa di Umberto Eco. Il più grande merito di Obsidian è quello di aver utilizzato la storia non in maniera museale, ma di averla trasformata in un dialogo moderno, capace di osservare con sguardo critico e non giudicante un periodo storico, restituendolo in maniera fresca e accurata all’interno di una cornice appassionate e divertente. Le venti ore passate in compagnia di Andreas Maler, degli abitanti di Tassing e dei monaci e delle suore di Kiersau rappresentano un bellissimo viaggio nel tempo che riflette sul senso della storia, delle tradizioni, della religione e sull’esercizio del potere. Ma è anche l’occasione per raccontare una storia intima sul senso di colpa, sulla cecità del dogmatismo e sulla necessità di mettere sempre in discussione quello in cui crediamo.

Pentiment rientra, senza se e senza ma, tra le migliori produzioni di questo 2022. Impreziosito da una direzione artistica di grande spessore e da una scrittura oltremodo brillante, l’avventura narrativa di Josh Sawyer e Hannah Kennedy coniuga sapientemente stili, generi e soluzioni espressive differenti per dare vita ad un racconto coinvolgente, ricco di carisma e davvero unico nel suo genere. Sicuramente un titolo non adatto a tutti, ma capace di stupire ed incantare chiunque proverà anche solo ad immergersi in quest’atipica avventura dai contorni medievali.

È vero, a Microsoft mancano giochi di richiamo, quelle esclusive che fanno girare la testa con la loro grafica e il loro valore produttivo, ma attenzione: permettere di sviluppare giochi come questi, avere dei team in grado di concepirli e svilupparli, non è meno importante. Pentiment è un'esperienza unica che saprà conquistare tutti i videogiocatori che amano ancora vivere belle storie col ritmo di una penna, come quella immaginaria che nel gioco traccia le lettere di ogni dialogo. Esplorare Tassen e i suoi misteriosi dintorni, apprenderne i segreti più reconditi e tracciare il destino delle famiglie del villaggio, è un'esperienza impossibile da non consigliare. La durata media dovrebbe attestarsi intorno alle trenta ore, ma se vi lascerete rapire dal suo mondo e ne usufruirete proprio come un libro magico, questo numero può persino raddoppiare. Menzione particolare per la traduzione in italiano, non facile eppure davvero ben fatta.

Pur non essendo una produzione di dimensioni particolarmente imponenti, Pentiment si è rivelato una piccola perla che trasuda amore per il tardo medioevo e i suoi dipinti in ogni suo singolo aspetto. La scelta di usare la grafia come strumento metanarrativo è sicuramente coinvolgente, così come la volontà di proporre un gameplay semplice ma coinvolgente per permettere a ogni giocatore di scrivere la propria storia. Tuttavia, proprio il suo stile di gioco e la grande quantità di dialoghi potrebbero rendere questo titolo non adatto ad alcuni utenti. Dalla sua, in ogni caso, Pentiment mantiene la straordinaria unicità, peraltro accessibile a molti attraverso Game Pass.

Pentiment is a short but sweet adventure from Obsidian, one that plays to their strengths when it comes to dialogue and gives players enjoyable mysteries to figure out. While there are hiccups at times with the story structure and the climax, it’s still a captivating journey through a rather tense period in history, but one that also seems oddly calming thanks to its likeable characters and visual flairs that bring Tassing to life. It’s another unique venture for the developer that pays off, and is one for fans of mysteries and adventure games to check out.

Pentiment Se il buon sangue non mente, l'ultima opera partorita dal talento di Josh Sawyer non poteva che essere di qualità. Obsidian Entertainment con Pentiment offre un'avventura grafica investigativa, con elementi di gioco di ruolo, estremamente curata e raffinata sotto il profilo dell'ambientazione storica. Artisticamente molto ispirata, anche se sostanzialmente priva di musiche, riesce ad immergere il giocatore in un quadro dipinto cinque secoli fa. Un titolo che si regge saldamente in piedi grazie alla qualità e profondità dei dialoghi, nonostante la totale assenza di gameplay. Un impianto che cede il fianco verso le fasi avanzate, calando di ritmo ed intensità, ma che nel suo complesso sarà in grado di attrarre e tenere interessato il giocatore durante la sua esperienza di gioco. Avec son esthétique léchée proche des enluminures et son authenticité implacable, Pentiment est un hommage scintillant à l’ère de la Renaissance. On lui accorde également des scènes de crime plutôt intrigantes, une poignée de scènes drôles et surtout une structure temporelle réussie et des choix qui comptent vraiment. Dommage que son récit parfois si laborieux et qu'un dernier acte légèrement poussif constituent autant d'éléments épineux.
